Common name: 'The Asian Trap Jaw Ant.'
The workers of this species have a long pair of mandibles capable of opening to 180 degrees. They snap shut on pray when sensory hairs on the inside of the mandibles are touched - which either kills or maims the prey allowing the ants to take it back to their nest.
Colonies are not large consisting of a few hundred individuals. They nest on the ground preferring to make use of ready made cavities - although they will excavate nests when no suitable alternative is available.
They can easily be kept in captivity and take sugared water and small dead / live insects.
